Participation of Persons with Disabilities

The Administrative Council and the Executive Office of the Celebration have expressed a lot of interest in incorporating the Persons with Disabilities sector within the al-Quds Capital of Arab Culture 2009 Celebration. This position was taken in light of their appreciation for the need and necessity to alter the stereotype and negative perception of individuals with Disabilities in society.

The Executive Office had thus employed a full time consultant, himself a an individual with Disabilities individual to supervise the sector’s participation in the Celebration within Jerusalem and all of Palestine, in addition to the Diaspora - in various countries around the world. This participation entails inclusion of various bodies, institutions and individuals in delineating visions and plans for participating in the Celebration.

Individuals with Disabilities will generally be included in cultural and sports, or what is termed “event’ activities, within the al-Quds 2009 Celebration. Event activities include: festivals, exhibitions, and arts and literary activities of all types and forms.

The promotion of culture in its various forms is considered an ideal tool for this sector to express itself and Jerusalem’s status in individuals’ hearts. The al-Quds 2009 Celebration opens up the opportunity for individuals with Disabilities to utilize their energy, invest in their capabilities and develop their talent in various artistic and literary fields.

The participation of individuals with Disabilities in the al-Quds 2009 Celebration constitutes a distinguished and unprecedented feature within the Celebration’s cultural history. This in turn will have its positive effect and constructive implications on people with Disabilities and their future prospects.
